Jackson Tavern Is the Perfect After-Work Bar in the Loop
It’s got a country lodge meets city tavern vibe, with sports bar thrown in for good measure.

Given the limited drinking options in the Financial District, we couldn’t help but be curious about the latest bar to open there: Jackson Tavern (216 W. Jackson St., Loop, 312-877-5373), an upscale pub owned by the Tavern Collective (Randolph Tavern, Tapworks Tavern and Grill). The new spot near Willis Tower opened August 21, and you can already tell it’s going to be a popular choice for happy hour.

First, it’s huge. The 100-seat spot can hold around 250 total, and the bar, at 114 feet, ranks as possibly one of the longest in the city. There are around 70 classic short-back bar stools lining the copper bar, with TVs evenly spaced throughout the stretch. Four-top tables make up the rest of the seats, and wood paneling and antler chandeliers give the whole place a country lodge meets city tavern vibe, with a little bit of sports bar to round it out.

There’s a deep draft selection here, too: 24 beers on tap, including permanent handles for Goose Island and Two Brothers (this means custom brews from both breweries and access to Goose Island’s limited lines, such as Bourbon County.) For non-beer drinkers, elaborate cocktails are available, including the “Proud Mary” Bloody Mary, with custom-infused vodka and all the fixings of a Chicago dog. Speaking of food, think “upscale street": burgers, tacos, and sandwiches, all better than the typical bar grub.

The Loop gets a new bar with a neighborhood feel.

"Genuine Food and Spirits" is what's scribbled on the awning at Jackson Tavern. That's the new place from Rachel Dennis, who also runs Tapworks and Randolph Tavern. The new spot opened on Monday, armed with a neighborhood feel among the weekday madness in The Loop.

Patrons will first notice the 137-foot long bar that sprawls from side to side. Hardwood floors and wood-paneled walls also greet customers. The black and white photos feature Chicago athletes such as Dennis Rodman and Mike Ditka, so this place might be the establishment for workers to sneak out and watch a day baseball game over a long lunch, or the locale to meet friends to watch the Hawks or the Bulls at night.

Jackson Tavern, a 100-seat spot with an emphasis on craft beer and cocktails and an upscale pub menu, with open Aug. 21 at 216 W. Jackson St., near the Willis Tower.

The restaurant will feature a 114-foot aged-copper bar, antler chandeliers and wood accents, along with 14 flat-screen TVs.

Menu items range from burgers and mac and cheese to a Tex-Mex version of poutine: fries covered in mole verde, queso fundido and smoked chicken.

Bigger doesn’t always mean better.

Unless we’re talking about your new after-work tavern.

So let’s do that: Jackson Tavern soft-opens Monday and, yes, it just might be the longest bar in the Loop.

Basically, it’s the length of one half city block. The entrance is on Jackson—you’ll recognize it with the gold-leafed lettering on the window. You’ll enter a long hall with a 114-foot bar (see, big—we warned you), deer antlers serving as lighting fixtures, a wall-of-fame worth of Chicago sports legends... So by the time you reach the Quincy Avenue door in back, well, you’ll be tired and you’ll want to just sit and relax.

It’s like they totally planned it that way.

This will probably make for an awful nice place to bring your regular gang of after-work compatriots—what with their 20 kinds of beer on tap and the Dirty Chicago, a rosemary-infused-vodka martini just looking for some takers.

The food menu’s stuffed with all kinds of soothing balms to make you feel right after a long day of fighting the good fight. Griddled burgers topped with housemade bacon. Lobster rolls with housemade bacon. Mac and cheese with housemade bacon.

Sounds like this “bacon” may have some staying power.
